Static Pencils-Colored Pencils

July 11, 2009 by brush

The following custom variants are all based on the Static Bristle Dab type, and have been developed to supplement the default Painter Pencil and Colored Pencil brushes. Many of the variants in the library make use of Painter’s Jitter feature which gives randomness in the brush stroke path, and in this case, a resulting diffuse texture.

In the demo image, the brush strokes in the upper half of the image were made with the Cover variants, whereas the lower strokes employed the Buildup variants.

The letter ‘P’ visible in some of the strokes comes from a custom paper texture in association with the Grainy variants. As already mentioned, the grainy appearance in many of the strokes comes from the Jitter setting, and not the current paper texture.

The download comprises of the following;

  • a complete zipped brush library for Painter 7 and upwards.

There are no restrictions on use, other than the resources are not to be offered for sale or redistributed without my prior consent. The zipped file is also compatible with the current (0.6.1012) version of the Studio|chris Brush Manager (see link in Painter Utilities section), which will automatically install them as a brush category. All variants are SaveRestoreDamping|SaveRestoreMouseParams compliant.

    Hi David!

First – wow – this is an incredible resource! Thank you!! I’m only 6 months into Painter 11 and am enjoying learning all sorts of great ways to get the software to do what I want.

I downloaded your Inkspiration brushes as I love working with the Liquid Inks category and had no problem. I also downloaded your static pencils brush set but can’t get it fully loaded. I noticed that when I extracted the Inkspiration zip, I got the xml, stk, and nib files and all worked well. For the static pencils, the zip file only had xml files. I’ve got the icon for static pencils to show up in Painter, but when I try to select any brush within that category, the list is “empty”.

I’m sure it’s something brain dead on my part, but was hoping you might share how to “load” the stk and nib settings.

    Once again, many thanks!

    Gino

    Hi Gino,

Manual installation of custom Painter brushes can be tricky. Painter will automatically generate new nib and stk files if they are missing, but the file and folder structure and install location are critical. From your comments, it sounds like you may have the Static Pencils installed as a brush library within an existing category (one folder too many).

I can highly recommend the Studio|Chris Brush Manager for simple drag and drop installation. A link can be found in the Painter Utilities section.

Thanks, David! I checked the Utilities section but it appears there are only 2 topics (MAC OSX and the Icon Handler info). I think I’ve seen the Brush Manager you mention somewhere online; I’ll try to find it again! Thanks again – I knew I needed the stk and nib files and that they were generated within Painter but wasn’t sure how you created them.

Interesting that some of the brush packages have the xml, nib, and stk files and some (I’m assuming older) brush packages only have the xml.

Bottom line – thanks – it’s great resources like this that help so much!

    Cheers,

    Gino

Found it! Wow – you were right! That went as slick as … well, that went very well. Painless and no manual extracting/filing/moving, etc.

Thanks, David – now, I’m going to take a shot at creating some brushes myself!

    Cheers!

    Hi Gino,

Sorry for the confusion, I meant that the link is to be found in the link text box named ‘Painter Utilities’, to the right of this comments section. I used to manually remove the nib and stk files in order to create smaller download files, but this is much less an issue these days, so I include them also. Glad you are up and running now.

    David
