Mirror Pad

The Mirror Pad is a rif template document I created to facilitate symmetrical mirroring based around Painter’s Kaleidoscope plugin. Anything drawn in the left hand side of the central triangular region will be automatically mirrored on the right hand side.

A Painter template document can be any pre-saved, Painter rif file which is intended to be used again in the future as an initial starting document. It may comprise of just a blank canvas of a certain color, size and resolution, or be much more sophisticated and contain several layers, pre-saved for various commonly performed tasks. In essence, think of a template document as a time and labour saving resource.

In Corel Painter versions prior to IX, a drawback with using template documents was that unless we remembered to always work from a copy of the original template, it was possible to overwrite them upon saving the artwork, although you can store a template or copy anywhere on your hard drive and open it in the normal way using File menu > Open, Painter IX and above have a special Templates folder. The contents of this folder can be accessed from the Help menu > Welcome (Book) > Document Templates drop-down (or from the above Welcome Book when Painter initially starts/launches). Accessing the templates in this way means that they are always readily available to use, and cannot be accidentally overwritten.

In Corel Painter versions IX and above, open the Mirror Pad.rif document in Painter, and without Painting in, or changing the document layers in any way, choose Save As from the File menu, and save the document to one of the following folder locations;

Mac:
Applications/Corel Painter IX/Templates
Applications/Corel Painter X/Support Files/Templates
Applications/Corel Painter 11/Support Files/Templates

Windows:
C [or residing Drive name]/Program Files/Corel/Corel Painter IX/Templates
C [or residing Drive name]/Program Files/Corel/Corel Painter X/Support Files/Templates
C [or residing Drive name]/Program Files/Corel/Corel Painter 11/Support Files/Templates

After installing the Mirror Pad.rif in the Templates folder, quit and relaunch the application, and choose Mirror Pad from the Help menu > Welcome > Document Templates drop-down. In Painter 11, templates may also be accessed from File menu> Open Template.

For supported Painter versions 8 and below, the original Mirror Pad.rif file can be stored anywhere on your computer, just remember to work from a copy of this file in Painter to avoid overwriting.

Drawing and Painting in Mirror Pad

After opening the document, ensure that the Draw Left of Center layer is highlighted in the layers palette and commence sketching in the left hand portion of the centre triangle region.

Additional Notes

• The Background Paper layer may be hidden by clicking on the respective eye icon in the Layers palette.
• Non-painting layers may be unlocked by clicking their associated lock icons in the Layers palette.

Known Issues

• The maximum size and shape of the mirroring region is governed by the Kaleidoscope plugin, and is at the maximum size currently attainable.
• Brush lagging may eventually be encountered during the sketching session. If this occurs, try saving the document and re-launching Painter.
